Will these charge on a covered porch that gets a lot of sun? Or do the tops need to be directly exposed to the sun?

Maximum direct sunlight will give the internal battery the best charge and give you the best results. Indirect light may give the battery some charge, but it will take longer to fully charge the battery and/or the light will not glow as bright or for as long at night. You may remove the battery and charge it separately in a compatable battery charger, then re-insert it into the lantern base as another option.

Are these lanterns weatherproof and suitable for staying outside on an uncovered patio?

Yes! The lanterns can be left outside but you'll want to make sure they aren't in a snowbank or left in puddles. With less sun they may not get a full charge and will only light up for a shorter amount of time.

Is there a glassless option?

Sorry, no glassless option in the blue lanterns. We do have a few glassless lanterns that might be good- like the Perry (item number LC005000) or the Velo (Item number LC004724). I hope that helps!

They are designed and developed in Brooklyn NY, but our factories are in China.

Where is the battery compartment?

The battery compartment is located on the bottom of the lantern. Also, make sure the switch is in the on position so the battery receives its solar charge!

Are the solar panels also blue?

The solar panels on the lantern appear blue-black because of the anti-reflective coating that improves the efficiency of the panels. And it just so happens to match the matte blue finish of the lantern beautifully!

The Nantucket blue is such a pretty color, I love it! The lighting is dim but moody and I like that. I got the set of 2 medium ones and one large one and they look really beautiful as a cluster though they're just as beautiful each one on it's own. They're solid, very sturdy and good weight to them. The glass had some markings but I was able to clean it off with a glass spray and they look perfect!

I purchased these a year ago and unfortunately since they are outside, the coating has weathered and the metal is coming through. The solar light still works great but was hoping the outside would last a little longer.
