Lights.com—Lighting Effects
Lighting effects can add to the drama and spectacle of any DJ's performance. DJ lighting has evolved over the years, from the disco ball to today's computer-controlled systems. As with most things in modern life, technological advancements have given the DJ more options that make it easier to get the party started.
Examples of effects include lasers, strobe lights, spotlights, mushrooms, moonlights, and many more. Gobos (shapes through which a light is projected to create an image on the surface where the light hits) come in hundreds of varieties and create endless patterns of light and color. All of these effects can be synched to the beat of the music at the touch of a DJ's finger.
The New Way to Control Lighting Effects
DMX has made the job of the DJ much easier and more artistic. DMX is an industry standard way of controlling lighting equipment and lighting effects, allowing one controller to handle multiple pieces of DJ lighting equipment. It works by sending a digital signal, rather than voltage, to an effect. Each effect has its own processor that decodes the signal. The digital language is called DMX.
DMX-enabled smoke machines, strobes, and almost any kind of effect are available wherever DJ equipment is for sale, including online DJ retailers. Prices will vary with the complexity of the technology.
